District Spelling Bee

The top three participants standing with their awards.

On February 5th, Southside Elementary hosted the Woodford District Spelling Bee for the district’s top spellers. To be eligible for last night’s event, these spellers advanced through several preliminary rounds. To start the process, third through fifth grades at each elementary school conducted classroom spelling bees. Next, the top two spellers from each classroom participated in a school-wide spelling bee. Finally, the top three spellers from each school-wide event were eligible for the District Spelling Bee.

Many members of the Woodford Public Schools community came to support the students as they showcased their impressive spelling skills and team-player attitudes at the event.

Rex Brown, Simmons Elementary, was the winner of the 2019 District Spelling Bee. Paxton Farmer, Huntertown Elementary, was the second place participant. In third place was Eli Rall, Huntertown Elementary. Congratulations to the top three participants and to all of the outstanding students who took part in the District Spelling Bee!

Additionally, the top speller from each elementary school has the opportunity to participate in the local Scripps Spelling Bee at the University of Kentucky on Saturday, February 23, 2019. The event will begin at 8:00 am and last until 1:00 pm. Ms. Candy Luttrell, the Library Media Specialist and Technology Resource Teacher at Southside Elementary, said, “We’re excited because this is the first year that the winners are eligible to go to the local Scripps spelling bee. We are thankful to Mr. Brehm for covering the cost on this!” The four students who will be representing Woodford County at this event are Rex Brown (Simmons), Paxton Farmer (Huntertown), Emma Tracy (Southside), and Madison Montgomery (Northside). Congratulations and best wishes to these four exceptional spellers!
